Courage!
Rām employed various kind of arrows-having heads bright as fire, shining like Sun, crescent moon, meteor & flashes of lightning. Struck by Rām’s arrows, terrific missiles of Rāvan got destroyed in sky & fell down in 1000’s of pieces
When his missiles were made defunct, Rāvan doubled his fury & in anger employed a missile built by Mayā demon. It comprised of blazing pikes, maces & clubs travelling at great speed like piercing gales. Rām launched an excellent missile presided over by Gandharvas & struck it down. Seeing it struck down, Rāvan in anger, employed a missile presided over by Sun god
The missile launched resplendent large discuses with terrific speed. As it came forth, sky blazed & all quarters illuminated. Rām split those discuses & other strange weapons with multitude of arrows. Rāvan then shot 10 arrows on vital parts of Rām, but he wasn't shaken & in return struck the demon too
In the meantime, enraged Laxman seized hold of 7 arrows. The arrows of high velocity tore off flag staff of Rāvan’s chariot. With another arrow, he chopped the head of demon’s charioteer & with 5 sharp arrows, he broke Rāvan’s bow, which looked like elephant’s trunk. Bouncing forward, Vibhishana killed with his mace the horses, which were as tall as mountains
Leaping down from his chariot, demon king exhibited violent anger towards his brother. He first hurled a spear looking like a blazing thunderbolt on him but Laxman intercepted it & tore it into pieces. The gold crowned spear pieces fell like a large meteor with sparks of fire falling from sky. As Rāvan prepared to attack Vibhishana again, Laxman seeing danger, rushed forward & shot arrows at Rāvan. Frustrated, the demon king dropped his plan to attack his brother further
Seeing his brother rescued by Laxman, Rāvan said-As you saved Vibhishana from my spear, I’ll hurl it now on you. This spear, having blood marks & hurled by my bludgeon like arm will pierce your heart & will leave only after taking your life
Enraged Rāvan roared & hurled towards Laxman, that unfailing spear, which was adorned with eight loud clamoring bells, designed by Mayā demon by dint of his conjuring trick & capable of destroying adversaries. That spear, with sound equal to Indra's thunderbolt, like a venomous serpent quickly penetrated bosom of Laxman. It pierced through his heart causing him to fall on ground
When a virtuous person stands up to a powerful person to fight against his atrocities, it is called courage & is appreciable. But it needs greater courage to stand up against the inner forces that prevent us to live a principled life, than to stand up to outside tormenting forces. If we are only externally courageous,it may sometimes lead to rebellion with no underlying cause to fight for.
Inner courage can keep us situated in higher purpose & makes us stronger to fight external bad actors too
Laxman displays exemplary courage tied to principles,to save Vibhishana at the cost of his life
