When knowledge becomes ignorance!

Atikaya said denouncing Laxman-See my sharp arrows capable of removing pride of my enemies. He then fixed an arrow on his bow.

Laxman, enraged at these words said-O evil minded! By uttering mere words don’t increase your importance. People can't become elevated by boasting about self. You rather show your strength to me, as I stand here with my bow & arrow. Reveal yourself by your deeds as warrior is only known alone by his valor

I, with my sharp arrows shall strike your head & it will fall like a palm fruit ripened by time, by the gust of wind. Thinking of me as a boy, don’t disregard me. Either as a boy or as the aged, know me as God of death. Vishnu as a boy occupied the 3 worlds with just his 3 strides, Didn’t he?

Hearing the reasonable & meaningful words of Laxman, Atikaya strung a Serpent arrow to his bow & shot him. It was destroyed by crescent arrow of Laxman. Atikaya then fitted 5 arrows & released but it was chopped off by Laxman’s darts. After many exchanges, Laxman then fitted a flat-joint arrow & struck the forehead of demon and it was smeared with blood. The demon thus tormented, trembled violently but soon recovered his breath & said-By hitting me, now you’ve become a commendable enemy for me. He then seized 7 arrows & released it but they were shattered coolly by Laxman

Atikaya with a splendid arrow hit Laxman on his chest & blood oozed out severely. Quickly removing the arrow, Laxman took a sharp arrow & fixed it with a fire missile and sent it blazing. Atikaya countered it with a solar missile. The 2 missiles struck each other like 2 enraged serpents. The 2 fighters hailed numerous missiles at each other & each had answer to the other. As Laxman was unable to kill Atikaya after numerous attempts, the wind god came & said-the demon has a boon from Brahmā in having the inviolable armor. Split his armor with Brahmā’s missile or else he cannot be defeated

Laxman the adjusted his arrow with a missile preseided over by Brahmā & shot at Atikaya with a terrific force. Atikaya saw that arrow released with augmented force & tried to hit it with sharp arrows but to no avail. He used his mace, spear & an axe but it reached him, broke his armor & sheared his head

Atikaya was dead & the terrified demons could not believe their eyes. They ran away back to Lankā with downcast faces. What a downfall!

We usually consider knowledge to eradicate ignorance. But knowledge in the mode of ignorance has opposite effect, it becomes the cause of our ignorance. It is very difficult to come out of the prejudices attached with our understanding of things, to learn & understand the situation and modify our response. Our presumptions based on self-comprehension becomes stumbling block & takes us away from reality. The very knowledge then is a cause of error & blinds us

Huge lessons for us. The only cure for this is humility to re-examine & refine our conceptions and act as per true knowledge
