Humility or Pride?

Rāvan got enraged because of fall of Virupaksha & destruction of his army. He felt restless seeing reversal of his fate & spoke to Mahodara, the annihilator of enemies-O long-armed brave demon! At this juncture, my hope for victory is centered on you. Destroy our enemy & show you prowess. This is time to repay debt of your master

Hearing words of Rāvan,Mahodara proceeded to fight & penetrated into Vānara army as moth rushes into flame. Mighty demon with full energy, destroyed multitude of Vānaras by dint of his valor. With huge rocks, strong Vānaras also retaliated killing demons in droves. Enraged Mahodara, with his arrows decked in gold, chopped off hands, feet & thighs of Vānaras. Facing this, some Vānaras sought refuge in Sugriva, their king

Seeing large army of Vānaras defeated in battle, Sugriva rushed towards Mahodara seizing a huge rock & endowed with great energy hurled it with aim to kill demon, but it was broken by his arrows. Filled with rage on seeing the rock broken, Sugriva uprooted Sāla tree & threw it, but it was also shredded into pieces. Mahodara then lacerated Sugriva with his arrows, who then picked an iron rod & with great force, pierced the horses of demon’s chariot. Jumping down, demon got hold of a huge mace

Both warriors attacked each other & a terrible fight ensued. All stopped to see the fight of the titans. Sugriva took hold of a formidable club, decked with gold & hurled it towards Mahodara, who in turn threw a mace. Both weapons clashing with each other fell. As their weapons depleted, the warriors started contending with their fists. The banged, slapped, rolled on earth but rising quickly, struck & pushed each other. As they wrestled & were exhausted, Mahodara got hold of a sword with shield lying nearby & Sugriva found one too

The sword fight threw sparks & it was a sight to behold. Mahodara with high speed struck his sword on the shield of Sugriva, but it got stuck. Even as the demon was trying to extract it, a swift swoosh from Sugriva, severed his head & his trunk fell with a loud bang. Mahodara was dead & Sugriva let off a huge roar

Sugriva paid obeisance to celestials, who showered flowers from above & returned to Rām, who rejoiced at his victory

When we think we are qualified or disqualified to serve, in both cases this happens because of our pride. Feeling low about ourselves is not humility, but humility masquerading as humility. Any service opportunity requires to be less conscious of ourselves but more about the task at hand & about our dedication for the cause & determined attempt. Feeling qualified is also unhealthy as “I” becomes more prominent leading to false pride. When we’re in a situation to act, we are there for a reason

The determination, eagerness, energy & the willingness to serve is the essence of humility. Nothing more nor less. This is huge lesson for us in our professional lives, when we discharge our responsibilities on its merit not ours
