Faith!
As Indrajit roared after killing illusory Sitā, Vānaras ran in all directions. Hanumān assured them-Don’t run away, come behind me as I march ahead. Cheering they rushed towards demons & started to consume them as flaming fire. Hanumān threw a large rock at Indrajit’s chariot, but his obedient horses swiftly dodged it on their master’s command. 1000’s of mighty Vānaras lifting trees & rocks rushed towards Indrajit & destroyed a huge contingent of demon army
Seeing his army tormented, Indrajit released multitude of arrows killing many Vānaras. Hanumān too caused maximum damage on enemy ranks & kept hostile army back. He then said-Let’s retreat as this demon army is not required to be conquered any more by us. That Sitā for whose sake we fought so far & risked our lives has been killed. Let’s inform Rām & Sugriva about this & we'll do what they say
Seeing Hanumān withdrawing, Indrajit went to a sanctuary called Nikumbhila to conduct Yagya for demons prosperity & win. He poured oblations into sacred fire, which blazed high to consume offerings of flesh & blood. The fire, swollen with intensity, looked like Sun wrapped in flames. Indrajit was adept in performance of rites as per scriptural precepts
Meanwhile on hearing great tumult, Rām said-Jāmbavan! As I hear this great rattling sound of arms, it seems an exceedingly difficult feat has been performed by Hanumān. Pls go quickly with your army to help him. As Jāmbavan prepared to go, he saw Hanumān returning with army from battlefield with a dejected face
Hanumān quickly met Rām & said in sorrow-While we fought Indrajit, he killed Sitā in front of us, even though she was crying. Seeing her dead, we felt sad & came to report to you
Hearing those words, Rām agitated with grief, fell on ground like a tree with its bottom chopped off. All rushed to Rām & some sprinkled water on his face. Lamenting Laxman embraced Rām in his arms & said-O venerable one! Virtue cannot save you, who is sticking to the noble path, from our adversaries. Hence, I consider adherence to such principles useless. Animate & inanimate objects are visible, but virtue & vice are not, so in my opinion virtue is non-existent
How can a virtuous man like you is suffering such misfortune? If unrighteousness has repercussions, Rāvan should have obtained hell & you would never have suffered such troubles
We also fall into such a traps when treading on a virtuous path, we face huge challenges. When going gets tough, we are bewildered into thinking that the path of principles is of no good & people who do the opposite, seem to be winners. Our faith deteriorates!
Our inability to face challenges may diminish us for a while but our unwillingness to face challenges & lose faith will definitely demolish us. Epic Ramayana teaches us that all our abilities come from Supreme Lord himself & faith in his words & principles thus elevates. If we think otherwise, the faith in self without faith in Lord leads to impotence
