Emotion havoc!
Hanumān descended on Trikuta & kept mountain full of herbs down. As Rām & Laxman inhaled fragrance of those great herbs, they were healed of their wounds then & there itself. Other Vānar warriors rose after getting cured of their injuries & some who were dead got life back. After the purpose was was achieved, Hanumān, with great speed carried the mount back to Himalayas & quickly returned to join Rām
From the day war started in Lankā, from that day onwards all demons who were killed by foremost of Vānaras were thrown into sea merely for the sake of their King’s honor, so that their numbers may not be known to Vānaras
Sugriva said to Hanumān-Since Rāvan’s brother Kumbhakarna & his 4 sons are killed, he cannot give any more defense. Let dexterous Vānaras possessing strength of Lions, take torches in their hand & set Lankā ablaze
The Vānaras at sunset, carrying torches attacked Lankā from all sides. Demons guarding the positions fled as blazing fire was thrown at towering gates, attics, streets, various byways & mansions. The fire consumed thousands of demon houses & mountainous mansions fell to ground. Excellent sandalwood, great value pearls, glossy gems, diamonds & corals were burnt. Linen, charming silk, wool, gold ornaments & weapons were consumed by fire. Chariots, coats of warriors, armors, bows, arrows, lances etc were gutted
Frightened demons left their homes & decamped quickly with families. They were deeply distressed to see their abodes & valuables destroyed. The archways surrounded by fire looked like collection of clouds bound by lightning. Mansions looked like mountains ignited by forest fire. Elephants were let loose & frightened horses were galloping in all directions
As Lankā burnt, its reflection on ocean turned its waters red. Cries of residents were heard 100 yojanas far & roar of Vānaras added to tumult resounding all 10 quarters. Lankā was transformed like the earth burning at the time of dissolution of this world
The city built by celestial architect Vishwakarma was reduced to ashes & all its glories lay shattered. This happened because of the emotion of one person divorced from reason & by support of most of his advisors contributing fuel to fire. Emotions have devastating power, by fixing us on one perspective & one narrative. When we react to such one-sided perception, we act unwisely causing havoc. Still, we believe that situation would have unfolded how they did & we acted wisely per our understanding
Our emotions per se are not bad and they are part & parcel of our being, but what is bad is our disposition to uncritically believe our emotions. They need to be processed first with a critical faculty of ours, which is reason. When emotions go wild, the only thing that slows them down is reason. But reason which if not dovetailed with divine reason would also be overcome by powerful emotions. Our faith in divine, helps us to take us thro’ avalanche to see bright Sun of propriety
