Honesty!
Hearing words of Mahodara rendering wrong advice, Kumbhakarna rebuked him strongly & said to Rāvan-I’ll annihilate Rām & wipe out your fear today. Don’t listen to devious advice from others. Warriors do not roar in vain as waterless clouds. You’ll hear my roar on completion of task in battle today
O Mahodara! Your words may be agreeable to those kings who’re confused, fancying themselves as learned but are stupid. Your giving such advice means that you’re a coward in battle. You always speak pleasantly as per wish of King & as such you’ve spoiled all undertakings. If King has friends only for namesake, treasury gets depleted & Lankā is left alone to be defeated by enemy. I would now set forth for battle to set right your imprudent policy
Hearing words of intellect from Kumbha, Rāvan burst into laughter & said-O dear brother! This Mahodara is frightened of Rām undoubtedly & is not inclined for war, hence such advice. None is equal to you in friendship & strength in my eyes. March to battlefield, destroy the enemy & achieve victory. You’re indeed awakened by me for this purpose only. Go like Yama & devour them all
Kumbha held a large javelin, shining like thunderbolt & said-Let demon army stay back & I shall go alone. But Rāvan insisted to take army along to take care of any devious attack from enemy finding him alone. Rāvan then placed a necklace, studded with gems around neck of Kumbha, other ornaments on his body & garlanded him with sweet smelling flowers. With large black shining string worn round his loins, Kumbha looked like mount Mandara encircled by a serpent at time of churning of the ambrosia
Kumbha embraced Rāvan, circumambulated him & took leave to go. With loud sounds of conches & kettledrums, army wielding excellent weapons, elephants & horses drawing chariots, they moved forward. Kumbha assumed another body of formidable form with breadth of 100 & height of 600 bows, eyes resembling wheels of cart & a terrible demeanor. He declared, I shall burn Vānar troops as flash fire burns moths. Rām together with Laxman is root cause for attack on Lankā & so I shall kill them first
As Kumbha moved forward, bad omens foretold his demise but disregarding them he marched forward, driven by power of fate. Seeing colossal giant, Vānaras ran away in all directions as wind drives clouds away. Seeing this he was delighted & gave a loud roar
There could be honest thieves but what is question of honesty when their act itself is corrupt. Honesty is not doing what you feel is right. A thief may steal to provide for his kids or butcher may slaughter animals and think he is doing his job honestly, but it does not mean he is honest
Real honesty is that one should not encroach upon other’s property & rights. This is only possible when one is in the mode of goodness, which means knowledge of who is the real proprietor.Huge lesson for us
