Compassion!

After Rām regained consciousness, he saw Laxman bleeding & unconsciously lying on the floor with his features changed. Full of grief he lamented-Of what use for me is the recovery of Sitā or even life itself, when my brother is lying before my eyes after being struck down in the fight. It can be possible to find someone equal to Sitā in this world of mortals but not a brother, a friend & a comrade in hostile war like Laxman. If Laxman returns to five elements, I will give up my life while all are witness to it

What would I say to my Mother Kaushalya or to Kaikeyi? How can I talk to my mother Sumitra, who is waiting to get a sight of her son? How would I console her, who would cry like an osprey bereft of her son, if I return to Ayodhya without Laxman? What would I tell Shatrughna & illustrious Bharata when I return without Laxman, who followed to the forest along with me? Alas! I would not be able to endure Mother Sumitra’s reproaches & I’ll leave my body here itself. I do not wish to continue living

Through my fault, Laxman has fallen & lies on a bed of arrows. O Laxman! you always consoled me whenever I was in great sorrow, who would allay my sufferings now? You, who struck down innumerable demons on earth, is fallen pierced by darts, like a hero on the same field of action. You can’t speak but your agony is disclosed by the redness of your eyes. I will follow you to Yama as you followed me when I retired to the forest. I’m the culprit & because of my misdeeds, is your present condition

I don’t remember to have ever heard harsh words from you, even when you were deeply provoked. You were able to shoot 500 arrows in one shot & surpassed Kartavirya himself in the science of archery. Alas! you have fallen prey to a conjurer of magic tricks

O Sugriva! You ought to return from here immediately since knowing that you’re bereft of my support, Rāvan will overcome you.Return back with your army keeping Angad in front & Nala Nila in the flanks. I thank all Vānara generals including Jāmbavan Hanumān & others. I’m also sorry that I could not fulfill my promise to Vibhishana, to make him king of Lankā. You all have accomplished all this due to your friendship. I take leave of you all, please go whereever it seems best to you

All the Vānaras who heard Rām’s lamentation for Laxman, allowed stream of tears to fall from their eyes. They respected Rām more than before

When we feel compassion for others more than for self, it’s a sign of equanimity. The nature of humanity, its essence is to feel another’s pain as one’s own, and to act to take that pain away. There is nobility in compassion & beauty in showing empathy.Compassion is not saying or feeling sorry for others but a lot deeper feeling which requires intellectual effort

Very important element of our relationship thro' which we understand, become aware, sensitive & vicariously experience feelings. thoughts & circumstances of others. It’s a sign of strength not weakness
