Are we helping or?

As Kumbhakarna recollected past discussions & advice given by Vibhishana to return Sitā to Rām, Rāvan angrily said-Don’t give speech but perform requisite action to fight enemies. It’s a waste of time to tell what was done wrong before, either by mistake or by illusion of mind or intoxicated by power. I don’t want to discuss all this but want to focus on whatever appropriate is to be done now

If you indeed have affection for me or if you discover your own prowess & think that you can nullify the effect of my wicked conduct by your valor, I request you to do it. He who rescues an afflicted soul whose fortune is ruined, is real friend. He who is ready to help those who have deviated from right course, is a kinsman

Hearing harsh words & pleads of Rāvan, Kumbha consoled his brother & gently said-O King! Annihilator of enemies, listen to my words attentively, abandon your anger & be your normal self. Until I live, you shouldn't think that I will not fight those who have caused anguish to you. In whatever situation you’re placed, I’ve to certainly give good advice because of our relation & brotherly affection. You’ll see fleeing of Vānara’s & killing of Rām Laxman in battle today, but you also think what is to be done by you at this juncture

Be happy by seeing Rām’s head, which I shall bring today from battle, leaving Sitā in extreme grief. Let the demons of Lankā, whose relatives have died in battle, witness death of most beloved Rām today. You’ll see that Vānar king Sugriva, who looks like cloud illuminated by Sun, will be thrown out dissipated. If Rām kills you, he can do only after killing me, and I don’t have any regret for myself, if this happens

If Rām today survives even after facing the rapid blows from my fist, then my flood of arrows will decimate him. Till I exist, don’t be anxious as I wish to contribute to keep your reputation as a winner. Make merry, drink wine, throw away agony & perform your usual duties. Command me now to fight!

According to Vedic injunctions there are six kinds of aggressors – a poison giver, one who sets fire to the house, one who attacks with deadly weapons, one who kidnaps a wife, one who plunders riches & one who occupies another’s land. They are called ātatāyinaḥ (aggressors). They are at once to be killed & no sin is incurred by killing them. Also if someone supports them in carrying out such acts, he is not a well-wisher of them as they help them in incurring more sin

Kumbhakarna despite knowing that his brother Rāvan is an aggressor & is wrong on account of abducting someone else’s wife, still supported him and helped him in the wrong cause. He bears equal burden of helping such a sinner

We also drop our guard and principles in supporting people who could be our relatives, friends & colleagues despite knowing that they are wrong. Contrary to our thought that we are helping them, it is a huge disservice to them as this will bind them to more sins. Beware!
