Rāvan, full of false ego further said-What great marvel is there, if by happy chance a bridge was indeed constructed by Rām? He, along with army of Vānaras, having crossed the ocean will not go back alive, it is my true promise to you


Mālyavan beholding Rāvan to be highly excited & speaking with such fury, did not say a word & as a courtesy offered blessings of victory to the king, took permission & went home. Rāvan on his part, assisted by other demons, deliberated about the plan to defend Lankā from oncoming attack. He assigned eastern gate of Lanka to Prahasta, southern to Mahāparsva & Mahodara, western to his son Indrajit and put Shuka & Sarana at the northern gates. He placed Virupaksha to be in the center & promised them that he would himself visit all of them soon


Making an arrangement in this manner, Rāvan under the sway of time, deemed his purpose accomplished & entered his mighty & sumptuous inner apartments of the palace


Meanwhile, Rām together with Sugriva, Hanumān, Jāmbavan, Vibhishan, Angad, Laxman, Sushena, Mainda, Dvivida, Gaja, Gavaksha, Kumuda, Nala & Panasa assembled to take counsel of each other. Rām said-Observe this city of Lankā ruled by Rāvan, impregnable both to celestials & demons together. Think of ways & means for success of our expedition


Vibhishan humbly stood & said-My counsellors Anala, Panasa, Sampati & Pramati went to Lankā & have returned. They assumed form of birds, entered the enemy citadels & have observed measures taken by them closely. Please hear about the persons placed at gates in four directions of Lankā. They all are armed with harpoons, swords, bows, spears, hammers & other weapons. A prey of great anxiety, Rāvan, knower of magic formulas, is himself stationed at northern gates with several thousand demons holding lances in their hand. The elephants & chariots number some 10 000 each, cavalry 20 000 & there are more than a crore foot soldiers


To further give an idea of enemy's strength, Vibhishan said-When Rāvan attacked Kubera in battle, 60 lakh demons had accompanied him. All of them are equal to him in prowess, strength, courage & pride. I’m telling you all this not to make you fearful but to arouse your wrath as I know that you’re indeed capable of overpowering even celestials by your valor. These 4 divisions of Vānara army shall destroy them for sure


On one hand Rāvan, overconfident due of his past laurels refused to acknowledge enemy's strength & made customary reaction to the impending challenge. On the other Rām deliberated in detail & created a domain, so that each member can contribute to their best ability to analyze, plan & strategize their response to the threat faced
