Efficacy of Knowledge!


Hearing deafening sound of kettle drums & conch shells by Vānara army, Rāvan paused for a moment & addressed his ministers in a voice that resounded the entire assembly hall-I’ve heard what you told me about Rām’s crossing of ocean, his prowess, strength & heroism. I know that you’re truly brave in battlefield, yet beholding that valiant Rām, you look at each other in silence, unsure about yourself, which I wonder!


Hearing this, Mālyavan, Rāvan’s maternal grandfather said-He who is well versed in 14 sciences (4 Vedas, 6 Vedāngas, Puranas, Mimamsa, Nyaya & Dharma) & follows path of prudence, enjoys sovereignty for a long time & compels his enemies into subjugation, should behave rationally & intelligently


He who concludes peace even with enemies or wages war at a fitting time, strengthens his own party & attains great power. A treaty of peace should be reached by king who is weaker or equal to an enemy. The king should never underrate enemy & if he's more powerful, then only he should declare war on enemy


O Rāvan! For that reason, alliance with Rām finds favor with me. Let Sitā, for whose sake you’re attacked, be restored to him. All celestials, sages & Gandharvas, are wishing victory for Rām. Don't get into enmity but align with him. Brahma, lord of creation, created only 2 classes of beings, celestials & demons. Celestials take refuge in righteousness & demons in unrighteousness. Due to your negligence, unrighteousness is swallowing us. You, who are interested in sensual enjoyments, doing whatever you like, have created great alarm for sages


The power of those sages is insurmountable like an igniting fire. Having purified their minds through penance, they're intent on promotion of righteousness, in as much as these Brahmanas worship the gods through different principal sacrifices, pour oblations into sacred fires with due ceremony & read Vedas in a loud voice. Having subdued demons, they continue to chant sacred text, hearing which all demons scatter, as thundering clouds do in a hot season


You’ve received boon of invincibility from celestials, demons & semi-divine beings, but there are men, Vānaras, bears, powerful & very efficacious, having strong prowess, who are coming hither, roaring like lions. By seeing various kinds of unexpected events & many types of terrific things, I'm perceiving destruction of all demons


Learning all sciences & mastering all skills is one aspect but the knowledge of application of these requires wisdom. Sri Krsna says in BG 15.15


sarvasya cāhaṁ hṛdi sanniviṣṭo mattaḥ smṛtir jñānam apohanaṁ ca

vedaiś ca sarvair aham eva vedyo vedānta-kṛd veda-vid eva cāham


I am seated in everyone’s heart, and from Me come remembrance, knowledge and forgetfulness. By all the Vedas, I am to be known. Indeed, I am the compiler of Vedānta, and I am the knower of the Vedas


If we are disconnected with the Supreme Lord, all knowledge is good for nothing & is a cause of destruction

  Make or break!   When Salya agreed to drive Karna’s chariot only on condition that he must be allowed to speak freely whatever he likes, Duryodhana and Karna readily agreed & thus a contract was made. Duryodhana flattered Salya by comparing him to Lord Brahmā, who formerly became Shiva’s charioteer at the time of destroying Tripura   Duryodhana concluded his long talk by saying: Dear Salya, Parasurāma delivered the entire science of weapons to Karna. Grudge-The heaviest thing to hold! Asvattāma hurriedly yoked horses to his chariot & set out, as Krpa & Krtvarma anxiously followed him. He soon arrived at Pāndava camp & saw a gigantic being with enormous head with flames emanating from his eyes, nose, ear & mouth   Asvattāma fearlessly attacked that awesome being with his celestial weapons but failed in all his attempt.
