Do we?

Dhritrāshtra asked his minister Kanikā-Tell me in detail 4 means of subduing an enemy-Conciliation, bestowing favors, creating disunion & if all else fails chastisement

Kanikā told a story-There was once a jackal who knew science of diplomacy well. He lived with 4 friends-a tiger, mouse, wolf & mongoose. There was also a strong deer who lived in forest & although jackal & his friends wanted to eat it, they couldn’t do so due to his swiftness. One day jackal assembled his friends & said-As you know tiger is unable to catch deer, I suggest that when deer is sleeping soundly, mouse should go & nibble at his feet

In this way deer’s speed will be impaired & tiger will easily kill it & we’ll all have a nice feast. All liked the idea & mouse went to nibble as deer slept. Thereafter tiger attacked deer & it was easily caught. When all animals came to place where deer carcass was lying, jackal said-Please go & bathe before we eat & I’ll stay here to guard dead deer. When all left, jackal deeply pondered over what should be done next

The tiger returned first & he saw jackal absorbed in deep thought. He asked him cause of his lamentation instead of being happy to have a nice meal. Jackal morosely said-In your absence, mouse boasted saying-It was I who killed deer & with my mercy only tiger can eat. After this I lost all desire to take part in feast. Tiger said-I’m glad you told me this. I now realize my fault to have such friends & from now on will hunt all by myself and then eat. The tiger then left

A little later, mouse arrived & jackal said-when you were away, mongoose came & said-The carcass has become poisonous after being touched by the claws of tiger. With your permission, as deer can’t be eaten, I’ll devour mouse instead. Listening to this mouse became afraid & entered a hole in ground. Next came wolf & jackal said-When you were gone, tiger said-I’m displeased with wolf & so I’ll return shortly along with my wife & make him 2nd course of my feast

The wolf ran away & finally mongoose came after bath. The jackal said-I’ve already defeated tiger, mouse & wolf. Now if you desire, you may try to fight with me to gain this dead deer. The mongoose just left, fearful of jackal’s strength. The jackal was pleased with his efforts & sat down to enjoy a peaceful meal in private

Kanikā said-O King! Anyone who’s one’s enemy-never mind whether he is a son, friend, brother, father or even a guru should be killed by any means possible & shouldn't be allowed to reside in kingdom

Listening to this Dhritrāshtra became very pensive & melancholy, for his mind had become poisoned & whatever sympathy he had for Pāndavas was now gone

One should be very careful about who your advisor is & what is he advising. One who poisons the mind is more dangerous than the most potent adversary. One should have intelligence & power to discriminate between who is enemy & who is a friend. Alas Dhritrāshtra understood this too late

Do we too?
