Help or hinder?
Sugriva challenged Kumbhakarna & said-Fight with me & bear the mountain peak hurled at you. Kumbha hearing those words said-O Vānar! You’re grandson of Brahmā & son of Riksharāj, so don’t just roar but fight with all your strength
Sugriva hit Kumbha on chest, but the boulder was crushed into pieces. Struck thus, Kumbha was enraged and roared with his mouth wide open with anger. He hurled his spike to kill Sugriva. Hanumān jumped & held the spike, which weighed 20000 Tolas & smashed it placing it on his knee
Kumbha then uprooted a mountain peak & hit Sugriva, who fell unconscious. Kumbha seized Sugriva & took him away as an impetuous wind takes away a cloud. While taking Sugriva, Kumbha thought if I kill him, all his Vānar army & Rām will also get destroyed. Hanumān seeing this was agitated & decided to rescue Sugriva but reflected
Hanumān thought, Sugriva is unconscious at this time, but he can regain consciousness quickly & can do good for himself. If I liberate King Sugriva, there will be a painful dislike from his subjects & his fame will be diminished. Therefore, I shall wait for a while for the King to show his prowess & cheer up scattered army of Vānaras
Kumbha took Sugriva to Lankā, where he was greatly revered with showers of flowers & fragrant water. Sugriva interposed between Kumbha’s shoulders, slowly regained his consciousness & seeing royal highway of Lankā thought what I should do now? I’ve to act in a way which is beneficial to my army. Thus thinking, Sugriva tore Kumbha’s ears by his nails, nose by teeth & ribs by feet. Kumbha thus attacked, was soaked in blood & enraged threw Sugriva on floor, crushing him. But Sugriva moved with speed towards sky & returned to his camp
Bereft of ears & nose, Kumbha pouring blood looked like a mountain with its screaming cascades. Looking frightful, vomiting blood with rage, he decided to return to combat. He got hold of a hammer & started destroying Vānar troops, devouring not only Vānaras but also demons and marched forward
Laxman seeing fierce fight entered battle in rage. He pierced 7 arrows into Kumbha & shot some more. He covered shining golden armor of Kumbha with arrows like a wind would make an evening twilight cloud completely disappear. The end of the giant was near
What a thought by intelligent Hanumān, to not act immediately in natural response, but wait analyzing bigger picture. We also may want to help someone thinking about our responsibility to act in times of dire need, but need a bit of reflection
The goal of helping is to enable someone & not mere helping. This gives an opportunity to others to show their prowess as sometimes our best is reserved for the last. Sometimes things look important, but it may not be urgent & the delay helps others to themselves gather the strength they need to face challenges. This raises their stature in their eyes & in the eyes of others
Huge lesson for us working in teams. Do we help or hinder?
