Stand UP!

Karna took great pleasure in seeing Draupadi being insulted & laughed aloud, as did Sakuni. Everyone else, however were greatly pained to witness the wicked son of Dhritrāshtra abusing beautiful queen of faultless character

Bhisma replied to Draupadi-Ways of morality are very subtle & thus I’m unable to definitively decide the outcome of gambling match. It is a fact that one cannot stake something he no longer possesses. On other hand, it is seen that wives are under control of their husbands in all circumstances. Everyone knew that Sakuni was cheating, but Yudhisthira never complained & always admitted defeat. Thus, I can’t decide you’ve been won by Kauravas or not

Draupadi cried piteously. After hearing Bhisma’s statement, she begged other members of assembly to consider how wicked Sakuni had cheated her husbands. Finally, Bhima couldn’t tolerate seeing Dushasana abusing Draupadi & giving vent to his rage said to Yudhisthira: How could you have staked Draupadi in this crooked game of dice? It is your fault alone that innocent Draupadi is tormented by cruel & evil-minded Kauravas. I’m going to burn those hands that have caused her suffering

After saying this, Bhima ordered Sahadev to bring some fire. Arjun intervened & said-Brother, never before I’ve heard you utter such harsh words. As a Kshatriya, our elder brother was forced to accept Sakuni’s challenge. Don’t be overwhelmed with anger as it would only fulfill Kauravā’s desire to sow dissension amongst us. Bhima somehow calmed down

Vikarna wasn't able to bear plight of Pāndavās & their wife & said: O Kings! You should answer Draupadi’s question. Otherwise if we do not judge matter due to our indifference, we’ll share sinful reactions for this despicable deed, paving our way to hell. How is that Bhisma, Dhritrāshtra & Vidura have remained silent? Let all kings assembled here give their opinions, without motivation of gain or influence of anger

Vikarna repeatedly appealed to assembly & yet no one uttered a word in reply. At last, breathing heavily like a trampled snake & rubbing his hands with great agitation, he declared: Irrespective of whether others speak or not, my opinion is that Draupadi was not won by Sakuni. It is said that the 4 vices of kings are hunting, drinking, over indulgence with women & gambling. When one is overly addicted to these sinful practices, he must be considered fallen & can no longer be accepted as an authority

Yudhisthira became so engrossed in gambling that he lost all good sense. For this reason, he had no right to stake Draupadi, who after all is not only his wife but the common wife of all 5 brothers

Raising voice against unrighteousness or wickedness, even if we are alone, is the loudest voice. It has far reaching implications. Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are. Remaining neutral in situations of injustice is equivalent to taking side of the oppressor
