Wisdom!
The gambling match continued to take its toll. Finally having won time & again, Sakuni asked Yudhisthira: My dear king, is there anything else remaining in your possession that you’d like to bet?
Yudhisthira said-My remaining wealth is almost unlimited! Now I shall stake my cows, other domestic animals & numerous other articles of immense value. Once again Sakuni rolled the dice & won all
One after other Yudhisthira wagered his capital city Indraprastha, his kingdom with all villages & agricultural lands, the possession of citizens except the Brahmanas & finally the subjects themselves. Each time Sakuni won Yudhisthira continued losing more & more and became more obsessed with increasing the stakes until they reached insane proportions. Indeed, Yudhisthira appeared to be practically delirious
Finally, since all his other possessions had been lost, he bet the 5 sons of Draupadi and lost them all. At last having nothing else, Yudhisthira bet Nakula & then Sahadev. With a roll of dice, both his brothers were lost
Sakuni then suggested-The 2 brothers which I’ve won are certainly very dear to you. But I believe Bhima & Arjun are even more highly regarded by you & so you may want to stake them? Hearing this Yudhisthira flared up with rage & harshly reproached saying: You wretch! By sinful means you hope to cause disunion amongst us, who’re of pure heart
With false humility Sakuni replied: O King! I excuse your piercing words for it is not unusual for someone under the intoxicating influence of gambling to rave like a madman
Yudhisthira went ahead & offered Arjun as his next bet. Sakuni rolled the dice & after declaring victory, encouraged the king to wager Bhima. Yudhisthira agreed & once again lost with the roll of dice
Sakuni said-You’ve lost much wealth. Is there anything remaining in your possession, so that the game can continue? Yudhisthira said-the only thing I have left is myself & I shall bet myself
Again, Sakuni cheated & won. He tauntingly said: My dear king! You’ve acted very sinfully by betting yourself when you still had something very valuable in your possession. You should bet Draupadi & if you win, I’ll let you take back possession of your self
Intoxicated mind taking its own decision is our biggest enemy. One falls into deep pit of ignorance, ignominy & indignity. And when the spell breaks he wonders is he the same person who did what was done like a madman
We all also similarly fall prey to such inebriation in our professional & personal lives. The only hinge to keep us stable is dovetailing our consciousness to the Supreme Lord Krsna
Let's bind & guide ourselves with Krsna's words of wisdom in Bhagvad Gita to prevent us from free fall
