Prescri

be Vs Reflect

Seeing Rāvan feeling exhausted, his charioteer took the chariot away from the battle front, but the demon king chastised him heavily

Hearing the harsh words of foolish Rāvan, his friendly minded charioteer spoke following conciliatory words – I’m neither frightened nor I’m stupid. I’m neither bribed by the enemies nor I've blundered. I’m not disloyal to you & I’ve also not forgotten the benefits conferred by you. An act which was not to your taste was done by me as something conducive to your interest, wishing well for you, to protect you honor with my mind affectionately disposed towards you thro’ attachment

O Monarch! Don’t hold me guilty like someone who is petty minded & unworthy, as I’m devoted to your pleasure & good. I understand your exhaustion due to you fighting strenuous battle. I’m not reflecting on the inclination of your valor or your superiority over your enemy. Also, the horses of our chariot were on the verge of breaking down being exhausted & fatigued. I also saw inauspiciousness in all portents which appear in large numbers & duly examined by me

Charioteer also has a role to ascertain favorable & unfavorable time & place for his master. He should know the geography of land, time appropriate for combat & visible weak points of the enemy. How to arrive & recede & how to hold one’s position or retreat should also be known by him. The action was taken by me to give rest to you & to the horses for relieving terrible fatigue

O King! The chariot wasn’t removed by me arbitrarily, but it was an act as I was overwhelmed with affection for my master. Give me command & I’ll do what you enjoin me to do with due attention

Rāvan satisfied with the explanation given by his charioteer, applauded him in many ways. Avaricious to fight, he said-Take chariot quickly towards Rām as Rāvan does not turn his back without killing his enemies. The chariot was then taken back on the battlefield facing Rām

When we form opinions without knowing the details, we in a way question the very integrity of team members who may have toiled hard for the overall good. This causes ill-will and discourages independent thoughts & contribution of one & all. We all have limitation in not having a 360 degree view of things hence it is important to collaborate to arrive at conclusions

Also, a team leader is effective when he makes his team understand by their own reflections rather than overbearing his prescriptions. Various alternatives should be given to the team for inner prodding & churning to come out with requisite decisions. This process increases the receptivity of decisions by all & paves way for increased confidence to build bulwark for handling future challenges
