Grudge!

Engulfed in both anger & sorrow, Rāvan ordered wide eyed Makarāksha, son of Khara to fight and kill Rām Laxman & army of Vānaras. The demon thus asked, thought himself as a hero & rejoiced. He assured Rāvan that his command would be executed & asked the commander of the army to bring chariot and prepare to go

Ascending chariot, he addressed the army that by hurling spears, he’ll destroy the enemy & inspired them to do their best. The long whip then slipped down from demon’s charioteer hands & the flag staff also fell by the will of providence. His horses had tears in eyes & dust storm raised, but Makarāksha ignored all bad omens & proceeded

On seeing the demon army, Vānaras leapt all at once & took positions to fight. A great battle ensued causing one’s hair to bristle. It was gruesome sight to see demons & Vānaras hurling maces, clubs, trees to crush each other. Rām saw Vānaras attacked vehemently, came forward to intercept the demons. Seeing him Makarāksha roared-Pause! Have duel with me. I’ll take your life now with my sharp arrows as a revenge for my father Khara, whom you killed at Dandaka. Your nefarious act is still fresh in my mind. By good fortune, you’ve come in my sight as I sought you as a lion seeks an animal to eat

Hearing his words, Rām laughingly said-Why you’re boasting with so many unworthy words in vain? You can’t win a battle by mere speech. I killed 14000 demons alongwith Khara, Trishira, & Dushan in forest & today is your turn. Makarāksha discharged multitude of arrows & Rām countered them all with his golden shafts. The battle raged furiously as sound from bows emanated with great resonance. As limbs were pierced, strength of both warriors doubled. So many arrows were shot that the earth alongside couldn’t be seen

Rām then with a sharp arrow broke demon’s bow & with 7 struck charioteer and horses. Makarāksha jumped to ground & whirled a spike (gifted to him by Rudra), which was dreadful & flamed violently. He hurled it towards Rām but was broken by 4 arrows & fell scattered. The demon raised his fist & rushed towards Rām, who smiled & fixed a mystic missile of fire on his bow. Makāraksha heart split open & he fell down dead. Vānaras rejoiced seeing the power of Rām’s arrows

When someone hurts us, we might become filled with anger, bitterness & resentment and carry grudge for whole of our life. Such emotional burden is so heavy that it destroys us from inside & crushes under its weight by negativity & misery. Even if we want to let it go, our mind doesn’t allow as if we are glued to such anguish

Letting go our grudges doesn’t mean letting others go scot-free but letting ourselves free of the heavy emotional burden. Thus being free from its clutches, we can give ourselves freedom to act for higher purpose & then can correct wrongdoers but without any animosity
